Default 91 3.9l is chugging

It started about 2 weeks ago with a lack of power turning into the motor chugging and slight vibrations. No other noise from the engine compartment.

I started by changing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor thinking it needed better spark. Not much improving. Also cleaned the vacuum lines and throttle body. Still nothing.

The truck has only 140000km.

Then about a week after that problem the transmission started slipping out of overdrive when doing about 80km/h. So I changed filter and oil which made the it slip less.

Would that be caused from the motor struggling to provide power and what would cause my motor to chug along.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds a lot like a blown plenum gasket.

Here's a thread on it.

That thread has great info. I suspected a block cat. What I am about to go and look at. The only thing that the symptom don't match is that the truck does not consume oil. Thanks for the help.

The plenum issue will often cause severely fouled plugs, o2 sensor and a blocked cat.

If you don't have an oil consumption problem, I'd think twice about doing the plenum. The oil consumption seems to be the #1 symptom of the blown gasket.

Maybe someone else can chime in with what other possible issues it could be. Possibly the throttle body needs a cleaning or a bad throttle position sensor?
