Vehicle Speed Sensor wiring
92 3.9l 4x4 Manual
So, I found a wire plug and a little bit of wire wrapped around my front axle. Truck is throwing a 15 code (no vehicle speed sensor input). Dropped the skid plate, checked the transfer case and sure enough -empty socket where the VSS should be. The new-found plug fits the empty socket.
My question is, where do the wires go? They must've gotten ripped back pretty far, as the closest remnants are at least 30" away and one is not to be found. Most of the stuff in the manuals just mentions replacement of the actual sensor, not the wire plugs.
How necessary is the VSS? I've still got functioning speedo/odometer and the CEL isn't lite during operation, I just randomly checked the codes and it threw the 15. So, if it's not terribly impacting my mileage, should I be concerned?

For 92-down the VSS mostly will control the TCC and OD units as well as the cruise control. Possibly the PCM will control the fuel and timing depending on speed and heat and throttle position.
Just get some normal wire and wire it back up. Here is the best picture I can get of the wire routing.

Here is a quick picture of the wiring diagram if needed.
