Is there actually oil pooling up, or is there just a spot on the filter that lines up with the pcv and/or crankcase breather?

Mine has a spot near the crankcase breather that hasn't been a big deal, I just rotate it. If you've got oil pooling up, I'm not sure what would cause that.

Just pull the pcv valve and see if its sucking air. Also shake it and see if it rattles. If it does both of those things it should be fine. If your just not really sure then replace it. There only a couple dollars.
