95 dakota starter issues

Default 95 dakota starter issues

i drove my 95 Dakota v6 3.9L 4x4 around most of the day no problems. after work i went to start it an leave the starter started to crank the engine over for a sec then just sounded like it spun freely. took me bout 6 tries to get it goin finally. any ideas where i should start with this problem?

Could be a couple things. First thing you need to do is crawl under and make sure the starter bolts are tight, I've had them back out and cause this.

starter bolts are tight. i got fuel and 12 volts going to the engine. idk what the hell is wrong.

Not uncommon for replacement starters to have issues with the gear sliding out to the flywheel/flexplate. Take it off and make sure the gear moves freely in and out against the spring. If it binds up it may just need to be greased.

thanks for the advise dodgeman1990. I'll check that out first once i get the starter tore out in the morning.
