96 4x4 V6 autotrans problems

just purchase a 1996 Dakota i got pretty cheap but it has no reverse forward gears work fine when i put it in reverse it wants to stall its like its in park and reverse at the same time any help thanks

start with checking the linkage from the steering column under the hood to the trans. look for cracked or missing bushings. have someone move the shifting arm while you eyeball the linkage connections.
