Default adjusting transmission bands

I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota, the transmission is slipping going from first to second gear. My question is the Chilton's manual instructions for adjusting the bands states:
Front (Kickdown) Band

The kickdown band adjusting screw is located on the left-hand side of the transmission case near the throttle lever shaft.
  1. Loosen the locknut and back it off about five turns. Be sure that the adjusting screw turns free
    1. Tighten the adjusting screw to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    2. Back off the adjusting screw to 21/2 turns.
    3. Hold the adjuster screw in position and tighten the locknut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
    ly in the case.
I'm confused about #2 & #3 instructions. Or maybe I'm over thinking it. Will this tighten the bands enough for second gear to function correctly? And if not, is it possible to adjust more? Wha twould one's suggestion to try next.
I have changed the fluid, the filter and also added Lucas transmission treatment.

On step 1 you tighten it to the spec.
On step 2 you loosen the bolt 2.5 turns.
On step 3 you hold the bolt still and tighten the lock nut.

I will move this to the 1st generation Dakota sub-forum.

If you do exactly as Crazy says it should work . . . good luck with it.

There is a more accurate way by rotating the driveshaft while tightening the band then backing off
Ask Transgo about iit
you did use atf+4 - right?
If your band is glazed or worn out...
