Coil not getting power
93 Dakota on craigslist for 500 bucks
My question is: does the coil get current directly from the ECU? I'm thinking either bad computer or crank sensor, any opinions?

IIRC the ASD provides the positive, the PCM provides the negative. Yes it could be a bad crank sensor or cam sensor/pick up coil. Or even the notorious splice. See if the ASD and Fuel pump relay are energizing and putting out positive power. The service manual has the wiring diagrams, that is going to be your best friend.
man $500 for that? even not running grab it; I pd the same for my 93 not running (supposed dead trans and engine)and that one is in better shape.
mine wound up the engine ran but needed tuneup bad and a couple injectors,
I sent them all out for a flush test and rebuild. I found 2 were bad and I had a whole set of 8 here same part number so I sent a couple of them in for same treatment;
trans I didnt care about because I had a 5 speed NV 3500 sittin here and I was lookin for a decent donor body to use it in. so I converted mine from a 518 to a NV 3500.
