Default 87 Dakota engine swap

i have an 87 dakota 4x4 ive been working on for a few months.. the 3.9 is getting tired.. just rolled 200,000 last week, looking into a older 318 swap thinking late 60's early 70's.. ive read alot of the info on here and have a few good mopar buddies helping me out (ive been in the yard quite abit here lately.. 2 fenders. a hood, core support, front bumper, seat, etc 125 bucks.. not too shabby!) im fairly certain the older 318 will need a modified oil pan and pickup to clear the motor cradle.. which i can handle.. got buddies - good welders.. but what im really concerned with is the transmission and transfer case.. i dont think the trans i have will hold up think its the a-999 or a-998? is that the same as the torqueflight 6? no idea about the x-fer case.. if i was to get an older motor as per i mentioned above what trans should i be looking for to work with my x-fer case? and if the case isnt gonna hold up what case should i be looking for? thanks in advance for your help and input! Jester

The older LA 318's and 360's didn't put out much HP. If your looking for best bang for your buck, get a Magnum 92 (5.2) 93 (5.9) - 02. The best is a 92-95 and pull everything, the OBDI FI is all controlled by the PCM and all is under hood that you will need. Dakota and Ram and Ram Van will work.
