Default Help, feeling dumb, ? about 4wd, transmission, neutral

I need some help but feel stupid asking. I a working on a hotrod project using a 93 Dakota 4wd, 5.2 as a drivetrain base. Over the last year when I need to move the truck in the shop I reach down to the trans rod that ws connected to the steering/shift mechanism and pulled up 2 notches (one for reverse, #2 for neutral) then the kids and I just pushed the truck forward and back.

Today when we pushed it out it was really difficult. I think one of the kids may have shifted the 4wd lever at some time. It is now back in the middle position ( I think that is neutral) but I still cannot get the truck to push very well.

Am I missing something silly? E-brake is not hooked up, brake hydraulics are not hooked up.

My guess is the transmission is not in the correct position. The transfercase does have a neutral which makes it a little easier to push by hand instead of using the transmission neutral due to not having to turn as much internals.

finally got it to roll. Very frustrating. I think it was one of those issues with 4wd that you roll for a bit before it disengages.
