3.9L Air Filter Idea
I took my dirty filter off and noticed there's tons of more response, I also realized its constricted down to a small flap on the front radiator core support. I don't want to do an open chrome filter because it will get dirty too quickly so I will be keeping the plastic filter housing. However I see some taper in the air system:

I wanted to remove the hose completely but it feeds the computer, would I be good just using a breather?

The valve cover breather seems to splash minor oil residue into the air filter housing, was thinking about unlinking them and using a regular breather?

Here is the tapered restriction...what does this thing do with the hose?? It runs under the air filter housing then down to the motor??

The flap near the grill is to keep out bugs and rain. Remove it so it is open to the outside air. Most people don't realize the stock air intake is already a cold air and ram air intake system.
The hose for the PCM is thought just to be a vent to keep it cool. The newer PCM's don't have the hose at all. Most people remove it.
The valve cover breather works in part with the PCV valve. They take unburned gas that pass by the piston rings and recycles it back into the engine to be burned. You can replace it with a small filter but it is best just to replace it every time it gets to dirty along with the PCV valve.
As for the line on the tapered section it is an intake air heater system. There is suppose to be a hose going from just above the exhaust manifold to the air intake. The small hose is a vacuum hose that opens up the trap door to allow hot air to enter the engine to help warm up on cold days. It is unneeded.
I think a common swap for the older LA engines is to get the larger air filter system from the Magnum engines which is much larger.

Have you taken yours off?
I thought about doing it because i figure it being there hinders airflow more than helping it. it would definitely act like a ram intake without it, thats for sure.....
If I remove the shield in the grill will rain be a threat while driving? I can put window screen over it for bugs that shouldn't restrict air?
Maybe a replacement stock breather is a better idea?
What drives the vacuum hose for the heater valve? It probably does not even work
The Magnum intake system is really larger? Huh I will have to look into this!
