Default new mechanical fuel pump not working

I have a 318 8 cyl in my '88 dak that im not getting any fuel up front. i got a newer mechanical pump and still not getting any fuel. On my 1986 D250 van with the 318 this issue stemmed from camshaft lobes being worn. the scrape marks on the arm of this new pump are a small sreak on one side as opposed to the older one that has a much larger streak area covering most of the hole end of the arm. I am wondering how many PSI word of gas is needed to run this truck and if anyone else has had this issue before? im going to maybe buy an inline pump if the pump from this other dak doesn't work but im just curious who has dealt with this issue or cam shaft issues before.

if its already mechanical, my suggestion is get an electric fuel pump and wire it into the ignition switch. then there would be no question. Your truck being an 88 if i recall is the toilet bowl injection style. go for a 40-60psi, and shoot for the high side to be safe.

yea the truck is an '88 but i have no clue what the 318 came out of or its age.

i do have the fuel pump from a 89 dakota that was a 6 cyl that i could use but idk its psi. if i cant get that to work i will go with the inline pump. i have the carter bbd carb. im not really trying to buy a preassure reg unless i have to so thats why i was wondering about the psi needed to feed a 318and i know about 15 percent of these Dakotas have V8s anyway. 40-60 is alot dont ypu think? either u can work more with more then u can with less.

To answer, if your carburated, then you need 5-7 psi, however, you posted you did not know the engine year so if the engine was a fuel injected type, then your cam would not be a long nose with the eccentric. (sans an intermediate period). Have you rebuilt the engine? Water pump off to look? The pump off the 89' should be around 20 psi, if I am not mistaken.

40-60 is about what the magnums run on. if its a newer 318 magnum, then you will need about 45. The 5.9 runs at 60psi, hence my saying to be safe.
