Default 96 Dashboard gauges!

I'm purchasing a 96 2wd Dakota from a guy on craigslist, when I did the test drive I noticed the dashboard gauges were not moving I asked the guy I was buying it from and he said that it happens sometimes and when he turns the truck back on they start working again. I don't think that is huge issue to stop me from buying it, which I am but I wanted to know how to go about fixing it. I'm assuming it’s a shortage somewhere but I would like to try and fix it if I can. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a DIY or tell me what the issue is or where to start?

No DIY or anything on that specific problem. My guess is a bad power or ground wire.
We have the Factory Service Manual in the FAQ that will be your best friend on diagnosing it.

i would geuss the ignition switch itself is possible. you really need to see what part of the puzzle is missing.
