Default transfer case grinds in 2wd but fine in 4

I have a 93 dodge dakota 3.9 4x4 I am just finishing up the 5 speed swap (due to my auto transmission taking a dump on me)

I finally got the truck together and running, so I figured I would try it out before I finished putting the little things back together.
When I put it in gear it went in fine, then I let off the clutch. It grinds horribly.
So I tried it in 4 low. The truck moved just fine without any grinding. So then I tried it in 4 high. No grinding and moved just fine.

Its only in the 2wd setting on the transfer case. SO im stumped on what it is? Please help me guys. I need this truck before winter starts.

Possibly the transfer case shifter needs to be adjusted so it can fully engage 2wd.

I will move this to the 1st generation Dakota sub-forum.

Thanks for switching it over.

I thought about the transfer case linkage and unhooked it and pushed it up into 2wd by hand. Still the same problem.

After a lot of thinking and trying things, I figured out what it was.
I put my original transfer case in, and not the one from the parts truck. The output shaft for the rear driveshaft is different and the yokes on the driveshafts are different. So Im gonna put the other case in and it will fix my problems.
