Default Removing torque converter???

I am replacing the engine on a 1991 dodge dakota 4x4 automatic... this is basically the first project i have ever done on a truck. I believe i have everything disconnected except for the torque converter. i have done a lot of research on the general idea of it and got under the truck and i do not see where the access to get the the converters bolts is... i was expecting a half moon shaped plate on the bottom of the bell housing, and there is none. so do i have to pull the pan on the tranny? my instinct tells me no, this will only expose the inside of it which is not where i want to be. right? so any help on this would be appreciated.
