96 dak 4x4 sas & 4bt swap
after owning my 96 dak slt 4x4 5.2 since new i figured it was time for something new as im having fuel mileage and towing issues. I pull a 16 foot car hauler regularly and im tired of the fuel mileage and the struggling stock trans which has been rebuilt once already.
I was looking to sell it and buy something 3/4-1 ton but unfotunately people dont see the value in a immaculate 96 gas guzzler.
Ive been researching for some time now and after many calls and email inquires have notived my lifting options are more like "an option" opposed to options.
At the end of the day i'll be essentially transforming the truck into a lifted towing truck as well as daily driver.
I have found my 4bt powerplant as well as a complete 79 f150 for the dana 44 and likely bring the 9" as well.
So now that i have my diffs and powerplant figured im looking for some trans and transfer case options.
The C6 and transfer case from the f150 seemed like a strong, suitable option until i realized the c6 doesnt have overdrive and is vacuum operated which is a obvious issue when running a turbo diesel.
with that in mind what are my trans and transfer case options while running ford diffs and a 4bt?
Id prefer to not have to do a bodylift for trans and or tranfer case clearance but i will if need be to have a driveline i wont hurt while towing.
Ive also seen tons of information on std trans options but would really like to stay with an auto trans w/ overdrive.
any information would be greatly appreciated before the torches, fab work, and drained truck account commence

been through those a couple times, seems the axle swap first is the way to go leaving the possibility of running an unmodified oil pan.

hows that truck of yours ride with those leafs out front? leaning more towards a 3 link at this point.

good to know. i was under it last night looking around and i think im going to run the coil spring setup up front to keep from having to build a front crossmember/hitch for the leafs. the rear frame will be getting boxed in for strengh and the triangulated 4 link crossmember anyways so i figure that should be enough for what i use it for
They have adapters for the Allison that is behind the Duramax. You could run a NV4500 if you wanted a manual. Id stay away from Dodge autos at all costs. If you dont have to be too flexy up front id say maybe go with a radius arm setup with Johnny joints. Lots of diesels with solid axles run this configuration. Radius arm setups can still be made to flex fairly well with a little tuning. Some UPS/ delivery van trucks ran Cummins engines with a few different trannies that you may be able to source. Godd luck

i wouldnt use the c6. its a bullet proof trans but it takes too much to turn it so you lose power. my 89 f250 7.3l has one. if you want a ford trans with overdrive you'd be best to run an e4od. thats my $.02 from all the research i've done on the c6.

Gas Guzzler? HUH? My 93 318 Dakota is better on gas than my former 94 Dakota w/a 6 cyl and also better than my 97 Wrangler with its 4.0 inline...
with more power....
