engine swap
ok my mother has a 1988 (i think) dodge dakota. it has a lil 4 banger in it that i do beileve is dead. what are my options for a new motor to fit in there? i dont even know what the engine that is in there is now, all i konw is that it is a 4 cyl 5 speed. i want to keep it standard. also if i start working on the truck she will give it to me. i have big plans (stereo, drop, ya know stuff like that) i would even consider keeping it a 4cyl and putting a turbo or sc (more than likely a turbo) on it. has anything like this been done? i know that the possabilies are endless (i used to have a s-10 with a 350 in it) it is all a matter of time and money. thanks
With about 99% factory parts you can put a magnum V8 in.But with the gas now a turbo 4 cyl may be the way to go.If I had not trashed my 5 speed I would build one for my Dakota.
88 2.2 5speed computer controlled
then
5.2Mag 5speed M1 intake electronic ignition
now
Automatic overdrive port injected

ok if i were to go turbo 4 or turbo 6 (did they make a 6 that would fit the truck) what engines are they? you said 2.2 l is that the stock size? i wonder if the tranny would be able to hold up to it?
just a few links

i doubt that the tranny will be able to bolt up

Dakotas came with 2.2 and 2.5 4 cyl ,but I do not know if they are both chrysler bolt patterns. They also came with 3.9 V6. The 3.9 and the V8 have the same bolt patterns and all the accessories will bolt on.
so if i swap out to a 3.9l i will need a 5 speed tranny as well. ok not that big of a deal. and i am gonna guess that a ho alt for them will be pretty easy to come by(if there is a big calling for trucks with this enging to do plowing) and a v8 s/c will work with the 3.9l? sweet deal
