Default Driveshaft woes...

I literally just limped my dak home, 4 miles, with a fractured drive shaft. The lobes that the u-joint bearing cups go in...yeah, one side cracked. So my question is....do I get her welded, or do I replace the whole shaft?

Oh,On the upside...I gots a warranty!!! Sadly, I have to wait until monday, if I turn it in.

If you got warranty (how'd you manage that?) have it fixed under warranty. I don't think I'd weld it--and I'm pretty cheap (and have a mig welder.) Downside with welding is that if it breaks again, you'll be stuck by the side of the road, and it could do some damage flopping around.

A driveline shop could probably replace just the yoke.

A rear driveshaft is under $100 on eBay... I think welding ain't worth the stress.

Protip/thread hijack question - if you had to, you could have removed the rear 'shaft and had a front wheel drive Dakota for the trip home, yes?

I know I can't do this on my Rover because it has viscous couplers that would burn up, but my understanding is that the Dak is all mechanical in the t-case.

Heh...I got it on the 20th, from a buy here, pay here joint, and the told them that I wouldnt buy it unless he threw in a 6 month warranty on the drive train. Amazingly, he did it. !8 year old car with a warranty. lmao....

I saw that. I think that might be my course of action, unless the kota that I scored some parts off of earlier, at the junkyard, still has its d-shaft.

In essence, that what I did, sans the removal part. It popped, 1 block from home, so I kicked her in 4, and went the last block, with the drive shaft swarping. It was loud as hell.
