Brian in Tucson, I changed the MAP. Truck is driving much differently and much better now. It starts up better, has more power when stepping on the gas, the tachometer seems to be reading more accurately and steadily. Lastly, test drove around neighborhood making several full stops, low rpm right turns and no loss of power/stalls.

So, so far so good.

Time will tell if this is the fix.

Thanks for all the help.
Thanks for the update--we all learn from these threads. I hope it works out for you--map sensor is often overlooked, but when you think about it, it's so central to the engine running well.

Default Update

About three weeks ago I replaced the TPS. (When I took the old one off, the mechanism which turns the shaft to open and close the throttle, fell apart in my hands).

Stalling problems fixed! (so all three sensors AIS,MAP, and TPS were changed) but...truck still stumbling and hesitating while driving

- Replaced 10 year old coil.

- Replaced EGR and O2 Sensor.

- Replaced ignition wires, cap, rotor, plugs.

Hesitation gone.

- - Replaced 6 year old Optima battery with new battery.

Still stumbling.... ugh!

- Replaced distributor pickup coil plate. Found oil in the housing.
- Ordered new distributor.

Stumbling gone!

2 weeks later ....stumbling came back as expected.

- Install new distributor (84-3696 Cardone).

(pics attached).

I have the exact same truck with the exact same problem. I haven't been able to figure it out either. I've replaced both the IAC and the crank pos. sensor.

However, after doing a little research I have a fairly strong suspicion that the culprit is the vehicle speed sensor. I can understand why this would be often overlooked. But according to eHow, the symptoms of a faulty VSS (among others like inaccurate speedo, etc.) include:

"vehicle may rumble or idle irregularly when you start it, or it may burn more fuel than normal. Also, your vehicle may lose power suddenly due to wrong signals sent from the speed sensor to the fuel system."

That basically describes what I have been experiencing, and as I understand, you as well. I'll replace the sensor within the next few days and let you know how it works!

Alacoque-

Actually it was a compound problem - multiple issues (see above) no magic silver bullet. Dealer was wrong, wasn't the PCM. Glad I took matters into my own hands.

But, having said that, @ four weeks after I installed the new distributor, truck running like new, I did (as you were mentioning) decide to go ahead & install the new VSS I had already ordered (since I replaced nearly every other sensor).

Then put in a Grant Lemans 1070 (I don't have cruise/airbag)- truck better than new.

I love my 1st Gen Dakota!
