94 3.9 new to me
I tried to read as much as I could(its a lot harder to read on a small tablet when your out of town) are you sure the arm of the float didnt hang up on something? When I did mine I found out the metal tabs on the float werent making contact so my gauge wasnt working properly. And did you test the float reading while the pump was out?
Sorry I was trying to make sure I informed any readers using this exactly what I did so they can avoid my mistakes.
No I did not test it while it was out. It never occurred to me a new out of box pump could be defective or not setup to work already. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be catching since I put the float arm in the direction of the arrow. I can't imagine it would rotate another 90 degrees as the fittings wouldn't be able to rotate that far and the hoses that are stock would not fit if I did.
Did your float arm face the long direction of the tank or toward the center of the vehicle? The arrow inside the tank looked to be pointing to the center of the vehicle and I saw no markings on the pump to indicate that I would use anything other than the float arm to align with the arrow.

Since I re-installed the fuel pump it went up to half tank indicator. I dove it until it ran out this afternoon (322 miles on a 22gal tank - 14.5 MPG) The gauge did not go down. I do not know what to make of this except that it needs to be re-installed again. I'm wondering if I need to pay a mechanic to solve this?
I detect a smell of gas like there may be a leak or something is open to the air when I stand next to the gas fill tube.

I just did the FP on my 93 dak 5.2. I'm having the same issues with not reading fuel level. I know (or am betting on) my problem being the orientation of my pump in the tank itself. My bets for your issue is 1 of 2 things. Either you have a wiring fault grounding out the fuel gauge somewhere or, based upon your inspection of the oddly oriented FP, I would assume that the "arm" on the pump is not making contact with the pump. Take a look at your old pump, the arm slides a kind of needle along a "track" on the fuel pump which measures the fuel level. Id assume that if the pump arm was wedged that the needle would not be making full contact with the track. As for the fuel smell, make sure that you installed the return line back on correctly as the old rubber grommets on those really like to leak after you change them from an old pump to a new one.

Thanks Spin. I have reset it once already. I made sure it was aligned with the yellow arrow in the tank. The first set made the gauge rise up to 1/4 tank and it set off the low tank alert after a few miles that I think was due to the float moving enough to show it was low. I'm hoping its the wiring and I am also hoping the smell is just a loose hose. I really do not want to dig into taking that bed off again.
