So, after some reflection I realized that after spending a weekend or three between classes replacing gaskets I may have messed up my distributor timing/indexing with the assistance of my step-father turning the crankshaft unknowingly while messing with the fan with the distributor out and the intake off among other things.. I have a 1988 Dakota with a 3.9L and a Holley Throttle Body Injection. I have read and searched and found a lot of conflicting information, so my question is, does the distributor actually affect timing like in older vehicles, or does it simply control fuel sync, like I've read for slightly newer Dak's? In either case some advice on how to properly index/time the dizzy would be much appreciated before I go out and rent a scanner or timing light.
