Default What carb should i get

I have a 1987 4cyl 2.2l and it has many problems that come from the carb, It floods and gets 8mpg and never wants to start, I found out it doesnt even have the right holley 6520 carb on it, So I need to know what carb i should get and what i need to do with it.

Rockauto carries a Holley 6520 that they say goes on your engine. Bad news is that it's a reman. and it $247.79 plus a $40 core charge. Looks like you might find one on EBay for about $100.

You could try rebuilding your carb, you can probably get a kit at your local O'reilly's , Autozone, or Advanced. Most likely for under $20, get some spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner (my fav.) and carefully go at it.

Or check google and see if there's a carb shop locally. I used to know a guy in Tacoma, for example, who could do magic with old carbs, set the jetting, etc. and would even dyno tune it.

My old school guess is that your carb needs a needle valve (controls the fuel flow into the float bowl) and probably needs to have the float level set. But a full and properly set up carb overhaul will solve your problems.

If you decide to go with a new carb, I'd look into getting a Weber. I had one on an old Corolla with a 1600 engine--made the little mill feel like it had a 4 barrel. They are NOT smog compliant of course.

Yes i did research and it has the wrong carb on it, Looks like they downgraded to the wrong one. I hear holley 6520 stock carbs suck. I looked into weber and they said to get a WEBER 32/36 DFEV, but they dont have a kit to put it in and drive. has anyone used a weber on there dakota? and what do i need to do to make it work? what pieces do i need to get

Dylan, I found this online.

Yes their is as a matter of fact. I just finished converting my 2.2L Dodge Dakota from a 6520 to a 32/36 DFEV Weber. Dont bother looking for a conversion Kit. JC Whitney said they had one and it was false advertising. Redline doesnt have one either. Here is what you do. Get yourself a Weber 32/36 Carburetor. Make sure it has the Air cleaner studs on top if you want to use factory breather assembly. If not you can buy after market. You will need to find a linkage from a 1990 to 1994 throttle bottle carburetor. You will have to modify it a bit. Cutting off unneccesary pieces. Make sure to put a small layer of grease on gasket attaching to manifold. Locktite nuts. ETC. It will purr like a kitten. Man my truck hasnt sounded this good in a really long time. The only problem I see will the 32/36 DFEV is I believe the jets will have to be upgraded. The jets from the 6520 will fit right in your weber. Good luck.

They were used on the FWD 2.2 engines. Just because there isn't a conversion kit listed for the Dakota doesn't mean you couldn't fabricate something. Seems like the only problem to solve is the throttle linkage.

I didn't need to cut anything or get any parts. I used a bolt and a couple nuts to hold the throttle cable. The only difference is I didn't need all the extra air tubes, I bypassed the egr and took it out. Then hooked up 1 fuel line and 1 air line. Turned the idle down a quarter turn and it purrs like a kitten. Ill take some pictures later.
If you have a 87dakota with a 4cyl then it's a plug and go. I recommend it to anyone. Took me like 10minutes.
