Default cat question

I have a 1996 slt v8 my muffler rotted out so I went to the trust cherrybomb glass pack cheap reliable and readily available now the paint is boiling off the cherry bomb (all the times I have used them on various cars this never happened) so im thinking my cat might be getting clogged so I was thinking about hollowing it out for now my question is will this turn on the check engine light? im not worried about an inspection as of right now I just had it done so im good for another year or so

Wait your a 1996.. That's ob2 isn't it. Take a look at you exhaust you might actually have two. If there is two you might end up with ****tier gas mileage. They do sell dumby sensors so you can avoid this I just don't remember where to get them

'96 is OBDII and you WILL set a code and cause your check engine light to come on. Where is your Cherry Bomb muffler located? The catalytic converter is suppose to heat up for it to work. A properly functioning cat will have higher temperatures exiting than entering. If your light is not on don't gut it because it's not bad. It's going to cost you more to replace the cat later if it's not bad now.

Check if you have a post cat 02 sensor before modding the cat. I think 90% of obd2 vehicles do. Don't be concerned about the paint coming off the muffler. It's a cherry bomb, the cheapest muffler out there.
