Default Block Heater

Need to replace the block heater in our 92 Dakota, 5.2. It sits at the rear on the passenger side. It looks very rusty and not very nice around there. Looks like it might be a problem getting the old one out. Is there any particular reason why these heaters always sit at the back of the motor because there is a frost plug pretty handy at the passenger front. Just don't understand the internals of the motor good enough to know if that would be a good place to catch the water. Any suggestions. Thanks.
