Default Knocking sound

I have a 95 dakota sport, v8 magnum and there is a knocking sound coming from the engine. My friend says it sounds like a pulley is sticking or isn't turning properly. Any help would be appreciated.

Ken,

Not trying to be sarcastic, could you provide a little more info, Can you determine approx where it's coming from, does the knock change with RPM, does it change under load,

Jake

well if you want to test if its a pulley u can remove the belt, id advise running no longer then 30-40 seconds since this disables cooling/charging ... or you can remove and sping everyhtign by hand...

also it is possible the flex plate if automatic has a loose bolt.. seen this happen many times.

might also be a crank/rod bearing specially if the noise is perfectly timed thunk...thunk...thunk ,
possibility of a broken camshaft.. yes it would still run, seen this a few times on older late 80's rams and chevy's .. (this is when i worked in a garage)

I would spin the pulleys by hand with the belt off. If none of them make noise then I'd look into the motor and where in the motor the noise would be.

Speaking from experience if you spun the crank bearings it would a be a continuous rattling noise ( like dragging a soda can on the ground behind you) and the vehicle would run like it had a dead battery

Thank you, I'll pull the belt off and see if I can isolate which pulley it is.

if no luck with noise there you can give it a quick start, if noise exists it would isolate it to engine/driveline but like i said dont leave it run long..

its possible to its the water pump.

i know spun bearings would be a pain but worn would give you slight noise,,, usually wrist pin bearings are bad for that a thunk.. but i seen bottem end worn out do the same..
