Default transmission interchangibility question

i recently bought a 89 dakota with a blown transmission and i was planning to rebuild it and i had just got the transmission removed only to find out that the torque convertor was in a bind and i decided to not rebuild this one. its a 3 speed with overdrive ( i guess you would count it as a 4 speed, im not sure) and i cant find one at any pick and pull or junk yard, but i found alot of 3 speeds. my question is would a 3 speed work in place of the 3 speed with overdrive (4 speed?) ?

thanks in advance.

95 and down 4 speed auto should be a lot of donors to pick from. a 500 would be in there now a 518 would drop right in only difference is inspection plate on front of bellhousing and the dipstick tube. once they went to the 4 speed auto the trans' are same length and the front yoke is the same... going back to a 3 speed the mount is different and so is driveshaft length, the 3 speeds took 2 different sized (diameter and spline) yokes... you'll have more wok in the "conversion"

Could the front pump bushing just be bad on yours? (and the converter where it rides in that bushing) Should be quite readily available from a trans parts place. Look up Dacco.

well sunday i finally got the converter off after heating it, and beating it, and prying it. and we went through transmission yesterday and found no metal inside the transmission. my great uncle also inspected it and confirmed that the torque converter was the only part to go out and we were lucky that it was parked early on so we are in the process of installing new clutches and putting it back together. but for a truck that was bought for junk price (300 dollars lol) im not complaining.
