Default 77-78-79 360 in a Dakota

I am wondering if a Chrysler 360 out of a 77-79 "can't remember the exact year" Newport would bolt right into my 96 Dakota or if I'd have to make new motor mounts and stuff. Thank you justin

You'd need a different transmission as well. The 96 automatic is computer controlled.

If you live in an area where there's emissions testing, I'd say it'll be pretty much impossible to get through smog checks. Here in Tucson, because it's OBD2, I only have to have my truck plugged into the computer and smog check is good for 2 years.

I'm betting that you have an old 360 laying around and are contemplating putting it in. I think you'd be probably ahead of the game if you found a Magnum 5.9 and used it instead. It's a better engine, you can wire it up so the overdrive trannie works, and it's a lot less 'dicked with' than installing a totally different engine control system. EFI rules, carbs are so old school and messy.

I do have the 360 laying around that's why I was asking. I'm not worried about the emissions because once I put the motor in I'm going to keep it under 5000 miles. It'll be strictly a drag racing truck. Would I be able to get away with building my v6 transmission up to work?

your easiest bet would be to pull the trans from that newport if you still have access to it and use that, would be alot easier and cheaper to fab up new mounts and get a custom driveshaft than to try and jerry rig wiring for an electronic controlled trans that would have to be rebuilt to handle the torque anyway.
