I have 1996 dodge Dakota 3.9 v6 that is stalling when u take your foot off the gas. It hesitates while driving sometimes it it feels like it died when driving but I hit the gas and for sevral pumps there is nothing then it chugs comes back to life and back fires. This seems to be worse in the evening or when its cold outside.

How long since the last plugs / cap / rotor / wires on that car? What shape is the air and fuel filters in? How long since the last time the throttle body was cleaned? How old are the O2 sensors?

Along with the above excellent questions, is the check engine light in? Providing us with the history of the vehicle helps tremendously.

My 1996 3.9 would do the same thing. Sometimes it would keep running if I played with the throttle, other times it would stall and I would open the hood, tap on the ECM with the palm of my hand pretty hard, get back in and the engine would start and I could drive away (later at unexpected times it would die again and I repeated the process). Sometimes I would also have to clear trouble codes 0107, 0117, 0132, and/or 0351. Most of the time when the motor acted up there were no trouble codes. Finally, I purchased a rebuilt ECM with a lifetime warranty ($50 extra for the warranty) and the problem went away for a year or two. Then it started all over again and I used my warranty for another ECM and it took care of the problem again. I am not suggesting the ECM is your problem, but I can say our symptoms are similar. I love this trucks but this problem is definitely their Achilles heel.
