3.9L performance upgrades??
I have 1987 Dakota with a 3.9L and automatic. Just curious about possible performance parts available for this engine? Possible 4bbl. intakes, camshafts, cylinder heads, or higher compression pistons. I want to be different but if nothing is available then a V8 is going in. Thanks for any input.
How about a '92-up Magnum V6? It's a 50HP increase right off the bat (125 to 175). To keep it EFI you'll need the motor, engine bay wiring harness, and fuel tank from a '92 to '95 (OBD1). You'll want the flywheel/flexplate from a '92-up Dakota as well, to use the Crank Position Sensor. You'll get better mpg too with the EFI Magnum motor.
Of course, if you're doing a motor swap, maybe the V8 would suit you better. You can go with a Magnum V8 by getting the parts mentioned above for a V8 (plus you'll need electric fans). Or you could put a carb on it, if you want to do the neanderthal version. Either way, with a V8 your transmission will probably need to be upgraded as well. Decisions, decisions.
