Default '89 Tailgate won't open

I have a 1989 Dakota convertible that the tailgate has decided it dose not want to open. I have removed the access panel on the inside and found that one of the rods has come loose at the latch end not the handle end where I can get at it. I think it would be an easy fix If I could remove the latch but until I get the tailgate opened I can't do that. Dose anyone know a way to open the tailgate with out taking a can opener to it? Any help would be appreciated.

Should be able to get a screwdriver or something similar in there to push the latch in on each side.

Ok I tried that and it did not do it. The actual latch is not exposed but I have seen on some trucks a leaver next to the latch that will release it. I have never paid much attention to the tail gate though and don't know if the Dakota has one. Is there one there and if so do you push it up or down in the closed position?

I have an 87 Dakota and the release levers are there. You're going to need a 90* pick and a flashlight. Look down between the gate and the corner from the top. It's about four inches down the side at the inside corner of the gate. Locate and pull the lever up. Then, release the other side.

Well I think I have it figured out now, still haven't got it opened but it should just take some playing with it and I am going to wait until the temperature drops below 98 degrees to spend the time on it. Thanks to everyone who shared their insight on this.
