Default Exhaust recommendations

So the muffler, cat and some of the pipe on my '88 are all pretty rusted, and the gas fumes filling the cab have convinced me its time to build a new exhaust system. Are there any recommendations out there for cats, mufflers and layouts that optimize cost, power/mpg and sound? I don't want to get pulled over, but my poor 4 banger is already pretty gutless so I'm thinking a high-flow cat and thrush?? :icon_chicke ndance:

The next size up pipe, high flow cat, and a Thrush muffler seems to be a good combination again.

Duals on a 4 banger? Only if you have a split exhaust manifold.

Plus, you can get the scavaging pulses weakened bad enough that it runs even worse, unless you use small dual exhaust piping.
