Default transmission problems

my 96 dodge dakota slt has been great since i had it but when i slow down or come to a complete stop the motor cuts off. when looking up why on the internet, some solutions where to make sure i have the right amount of transmission fluid and oil in the truck, but both of those are always good when it cuts off so im thinking it may be the transsmisson going out is there any way i can save it without replacing it?
any help will do i just dont want to sell the truck thanks

If you slip the transmission into neutral as you're slowing down, does it still stall out?

That should remove the transmission from the equation, and let you concentrate on a problem with idle vis a problem with the transmission.
