Speedometer broken if it's a Gen1; that's the same mechanical device, but different drive paths.

What year Gen1 is it? They used at least three different speedometers for the Gen1.

1993 - the speedo and odo are both driven off the same shaft; so if the odo is working, everything's working but the speedo/odo combo.

Good news! You can take one out of a pre-1995 Dakota and it'll fit in and work fine!

The factory service manual has details; however, to do it in the Cliff's Notes version -

1) Remove the knee panel under the steering column.

2) Remove the dash surround.

3) Remove the four screws that holds the instrument cluster in place.

3a) Also, if an auto, remove the wire from the PRNDL down to the column.

4) Ease the cluster out, unplugging the two plugs and release the clip holding the speedo cable to the speedometer.

5) Remove the clear cover (one **** on the odometer, four screws around).

6) Remove the speedo (one nut behind I think; two screws holding it to the cluster)

7) Reverse to reassemble.

I'll have to suggest *WARNING! BROKEN RECORD MODE!* that you find a Factory Service Manual off Ebay or if possible at one of the Dakota forums on the web, so you have it available.
