Default 1995 with 288,000

I’ve found a well taken care of 1995 Dakota with the V6 and 4wd. It has the original engine with 288,000 miles. How soon can I expect the whole thing to fall apart? I realize it’s all depends on the driver and other factors At what mileage does this year model start going to hell? I’ve never seen a Dakota with 288k

I have ... but I kept it rolling, and finally got the motor rebuilt at 385,000 miles (it's currently just shy of 407,000 miles ... )

When can you expect them to fall apart? Take care of it, and never.

When can you expect to do some work to the motor? By now the factory valve seals are leaking oil; the factory PCV valve is probably gumming up. Due to the oil burning, the O2 sensors and the catalytic converters are failing if they haven't already. Get the valve seals replaced, put in a factory PCV valve, and replace the O2 sensor and do something about that plugging cat
