Question Fuel gauge suddenly stopped working 1993 Dakota

I have a 1993 Dakota Sport 5.2 v8 rwd extended cab. Odometer reads ~240,000 kms

I bought this truck used about 6 months ago and the fuel gauge was fine - never had any issues with it - worked like a charm. Yesterday, when the gas tank was approx 1/4 full, I parked it, came back less than 30 mins later and when I started the truck, the fuel gauge was on empty. I filled it up with gas and its still on empty and hasn't budged since.

I've done some searching on this forum and it seems other people have had issues where the gauge acts erratically for a while before shutting off completely and this suggests a worn contact at the fuel sending unit.

But mine just suddenly stopped from one minute to the next.

I appreciate any advice as to where the issue might be.

I knew a guy who owned some rental properties. Well one day there was a leak in one of his properties and the insurer refused to cover it. They claimed the coverage was for "sudden" leaks and implying he was not doing proper maintenance. He successfully argued that all leaks are sudden leaks. One moment it is not leaking then suddenly the next moment it is.

UPDATE: My gas gauge is working again. During my research on this forum, someone wrote something like "Gas treatment additive works wonders" so I added some and a day later hey presto, my fuel gauge is back to normal.

Congratulations on getting it fixed. I was about to post a similar problem, the gas gauge was below zero. The battery voltage instrument was below zero also. Both pointers were pointed directly to the left.I went through and did a conductivity test on all fuses. I found the bad one and quite naturally it was one of the last ones I checked. It was ob the upper left of the fuse panel. 5 Amp.
