Pulled back the shielding and found a factory solder joint with three orange wires. The boy missed one! Kinda scary cause he was a helicopter mechanic!! 😂

Anyhow, he knew what to do and got that issue corrected. Truck runs great again! I made the boy do this on his own so he would get to know his truck. He learned alot and found that he hates wiring diagnostics lmao....

Thank you to all who pitched in and pointed us in the right direction. 👍👍
Dealt with enough wiring issues myself that I'm amazed at how the truck even runs now. Then throwing parts at it when it's wiring issue is aggravating, bought a PCM to find out it was blown ASD fuse. Glad I could point you in the right direction to get it fixed.

My truck sat in a damp barn for years. After I replaced it, I took the old sensor and tested it with a volt/ohm meter and a torch. Cleaning the rusted plug in the top got it working. For how long I don't know. Considering the cost, a new one was worth the price. I'm not sure if your truck has one or two sensors. My '01 had two but my old '93 Dakota never gave me any trouble as I bought it new and kept everything clean and maintained. They don't cost much so try new ones.

I can do a quick test with a multi meter - also, according to USPS, my SnapOn MT-2500 carts for my truck should be in today; so I think I'll query the ECM first before I spend any money.

They're not much, true.

But, without any work due to the lockdown, I don't have any money

Well!

Back to square one. Didn't run the truck yesterday due to bad weather. Boy jumped in it this morning and BAM. Same crap!

I'll bet you have another splice, or a connector, that's flaky.

Time to drag out the multimeter again...

Oh, and make sure the crank position sensor or cam position sensor didn't come unplugged!

Yeah, both are plugged in. It cranks but is backfiring and running like poopoo. I am just wondering if the cam sensor might have a broken wire where in goes under the distributor cap. I have a 2000 second gen with a 3.9. Gonna check and see if it has the same plug as the 93 on the cam sensor. If it does just gonna swap it over and see if that changes anything. Cam and crank sensor are the only ones we havent changed.

Wait - the cam sensor doesn't have that much to do with the firing; check the crank sensor first. Bad news, 94 picked up a different design; don't know if it was just the plug or something more.

ALSO - be sure to check timing on it. No, you can't set it, but it ought to run pretty steady; if it's jumping like crazy, you might have a problem with the crank sensor.

Will do. Steady timing with my timing light. It had a new tuming set installed by previous owner.

Its definitely gotta be electrical. Ran like a dream. The boy put 20+ miles on it in the neighborhood.

Have him run ALL the splices. When not running, it's time to check voltage at the coil and fuel pressure.

You could be bit by two different problems; a pump that's failing intermittently AND previous electrical problems. That always sucks when you get two different problems hitting you at the same time!

Yeah its got a new fuel pump and has 40+ psi at the rail. Right at 12 volts to coil. Coil is new. I got a feeling its related to those orange wires. Likely going to cam and crank sensor. Need to find wiring diagram.

Just weird cause after all the intake gasket work it still ran like crap until I jacked with the harness that leads to the dizzy. After repairing that factory solder joint it ran perfect, well, until today.
