Default '87 Speedometer dead in the water

Hello all,
I just bought a '87 Dakota and have a whole laundry list of small odds and ends that aren't working or need attention. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a good manual?
But back to the title, my speedometer is completely dead and the shift points on my tranny seem to be all mucked up as well (I'm hitting 3rd by around 15 mph.) Anyone know of any common failures that share these symptoms?
Any information would be appreciated!

I'd check the cables from the transmission up to the VSS first. Also from the VSS back to the speedometer in the cluster.

I'd check for the factory service manual off eBay used, or check Helm Inc. or Bishko books for a paper or PDF version.
