I have a 1993 Dodge Dakota w/318 and I'd like to put dual exhaust on it, but not sure of the options? I'm going with 40 series flow masters and I'd like to have both exhausts down turned just before the rear axle for added noise I was also thinking about a Y pipe with no cat. convertor or a high flow convertor? I could do either because I currently have nothing on it, I don't believe the cat. conv. is needed? It seems to run fine, just loud... Please let me know what you think or what you guys have done? I had the same idea for my '92. I am going to go with a single Flowmaster 40Series with a 3" inlet and dual 2.5" outlets.

 

I'll be using true duals, not one muffler but two.. If I'm going to all this trouble I'll spend alittle more and do it right, plus it would bother me. I want duals, not imitation duals... My only question is the Cat. Convertor? Do I need to replace it our not? Also, has anyone else used a Y pipe on their Dakota?

 

Do you live in an area with smog laws? If so, you will have to get a second CAT for the other side.

 

If you use a Y pipe then you wouldn't have true duals. Maybe you are thinking of an X pipe or (crossover)?
Technically you are supposed to have a CAT for each side if you run duals, BUT like it was stated, it depends what your state will allow for inspection.

 

I was thinking an X pipe, so your correct. I live in Indiana so I have no smog laws / inspections, so the cats aren't an issue. With this said what's the best system, I will probably go with 40 serious flow masters. I want to use a 2.5 in pipe. Any suggestions? I believe this setup will work and perform fine?

 

Only think to worry about with true duals is the O2 sensor. You only have one so it will be reading off one bank. Theoretically each head should expell the same; however, it could throw off how you truck runs. May want to still use a Y pipe and do single in dual out. I dunno.

i would go with a single flowmaster with dual outlets and a converter just to be safe[in case they change laws].with these older trucks they still sound mean with only one flowmaster.get a high flow converter also .i put the same series muffler and a high flow cat on my 91 318 4x4 with only one tail pipe and it sounds great.

 

Just some added info. I had a flowmaster installed with my performance headers/Y-pipe on my 96 318 Dakota but I was told not to even worry about the Cat because Dodge made it already as high flow as any aftermarked performance would be.
