Default my $1000 beater project

I haven't posted on here much just been lurking around, but my 90 Dakota 4X4 V6 project is coming close to the end.

Its got 200k on it and runs like a top but was pretty ugly lookin. I payed $600 for it and started in on fixing it up to make it a bit nicer.

I've been kinda documenting the progress and posting pics over at my other car site. As much as I like this truck, when summer rolls around my real passion is Chrysler Conquests so I'll just link you to my thread on that site....

http://www.starquestclub.com/forums/...ic.php?t=33876

Check out my truck, check out the site, let me know what ya think.

Oh, and I got a couple other things.... and this may be the wrong place to bring this up...

1. I'm noticing the truck smokes slightly while running and has that burnt oil smell- is there any of those engine oil additive type things that will help clear that up a bit? I know Slick 50 sucks but I've heard of other ones- Amsoil, Motor Honey, etc... are they all junk?

2. Anyone interested in the capper that came on the truck? it still looks just like it does in the first pics. I've got no use for it and can also paint it if the buyer wishes to pay for the materials.

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoy my progress as much as I have.

Nice.

Always liked the Quests too. Almost bought a TSI brand new in 89, couldn't afford the insurance premium on it though. Found another local one I could have picked up for $700, but it was not the right time to pick up another car, especially one that was not running. One day I'll get one though.

Just my personal opinion, but there are no additives to correct worn internal engine parts. Think about it, if the piston rings are letting oil pass then they are wearing out (200k). You can run a good thicker oil like Havoline 20w-50, but 200k is pretty good for smoking a little.

The only thing I have used in the past is Engine Restorer. It did help a little on my Lebaron, but it is not a cure all. I think it only really works when you are borderline and just beginning to smoke or burn oil.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'll try that engine restorer, a couple friends reccomended it as well. I'm not exactly looking for a cure necessaraly, I'd just like to make it better or possibly help extend the few miles this motor has left.

Some more?s...

Is the Restorer an additive or is it an oil that I use in place of regular oil? Also, if I use an additive, what would happen if I used a heavier oil like 360 suggested in addition to the additive? Would I be doing twice the good or will I actualy be doing harm?

Sorry for all the "rookie" questions. I do body work and audio stuff but I don't mess around under the hood too much. I do understand how drivetrains work and I do my own oil changes and tune-ups, but so far that's about it. Now that this truck is done I'm actualy about to take on puting a new turbo, headgasket, timing set and clutch in my wife's Conquest before spring *fingers crossed*. Luckily, I have plenty of help at that site and a desire to learn. Being a "car guy" I guess I gotta learn this aspect of it sometime LOL

Thanks again for all your help

Engine Restorer is just an additive. I don't think it has any restrictions on oil viscosity, so you should be fine. Read the package just to be safe though.

You can run it with any other oil. I BELIEVE it takes the place of a quart of oil or however much you put in there. Personally I would try some 10w-40 and a quart of Lucas. Its really thick and works great for quietening up lifters and such.
In the summer, run 20w-50 and use a quart of lucas with every other oil change.
