Default No crank with relay in

I’ve recently been going through my truck replacing everything I can think of, well today I got some new relays and went to put them in, there was no relay in the starter relay spot and instead was what looks like a homemade wire with two relay prongs at each end plugged in. I took it out and put a relay in the spot and the Kota wouldn’t crank at all. If I put the wire back in it cranks fine. Any ideas?

Bad wiring to the starter relay - IF your truck actually USED a starter relay.

What year, which motor?

(I know you've said, but I can't be arsed to hunt it back up again.)

it’s a 92 with the 5.2, it seems like a relay was in there cause now they just have that wire contraption. I mean it works so I don’t need to change it but I would like to have it back to original

Do you yet have the factory service manual for a 1992?

Depending on which contacts were in use, it may be that a previous owner just couldn't be arsed to properly fix the neutral safety switch - which grounds the coil side, positive fed from ignition switch. This is presuming the ignition switch terminal (terminal A) is what's jumped to the starter, terminal D on the wiring diagram I attached.

I'd get that fixed.
