I picked up '96 Dakota, 2WD, 3.9L engine, from a buddy a couple of weeks ago. He said the truck had been sitting for several years and it was stuck in Park. Turns out it wasn't, but it does have other problems. I replaced most of the normal wear items and I'm finally to the point of starting the truck. When I turn the key nothing happens, but I can start the truck by jumping across the Battery Relay. That leads me to believe the problem is between the key and the fuse box. I'd appreciate any suggestions on where to look.

Step 0 - the 1996 Factory Service Manual is downloadable from a link in the FAQ message (about 40% down). Get that FIRST for the wiring diagrams.

Step 1 - With those in hand. check for voltage into and out of the ignition switch. It could be as simple as the switch has failed.
