92 Dakota transmission problems need help plz
Hi my name is Dillon. I have a 1992 Dodge Dakota V6 3.9l 5speed (AX-15 transmission) 2wd. I love this truck. It’s not pretty but it’s a dang work horse. A few months ago I was driving it, shifted from 3rd-4th. Then all of a sudden it’s stuck in 4th gear. I have tried everything I kno except actually dropping the whole transmission. Is there anyone out there who can help me out a little bit? I don’t kno why it’s stuck or wht happened. I don’t know the best, easiest, and cheapest way to fix it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank y’all
First you should probably list what you’ve already done to the tranny as far as maintenance. Are you towing or hauling with the truck? How do you know it’s stuck in 4th?
sometimes the fluid will smell burnt or dropping the pan will reveal the problem.
if it something internal is broken, you’ll probably need to have the transmission repaired at a shop or consider a salvaged or rebuilt transmission. There are shops that specialize in older trannys.
Preventative maintenance is all I’ve even been able to do on my automatics. Changing fluid and filter annually, adding a cooler if towing and hope for the best.
