Driver side door latch adjustment
On my 89 Dodge Dakota sport truck my driver side door would not open from the outside door handle but opened fine from the inside handle. I searched this forum and found that others with this problem had replaced the plastic clips connecting the rods to the latch or handle and solved the problem. These plastic clips tend to loosen and deteriorate in time. So I carefully removed the inside door panel and prepared to replace these clips. Clips were purchased from OReillys auto parts, Dorman #75450. However, much to my surprise, upon examination, all the clips were in good shape. After more searching in this forum and in workshop manuals, I learned about the latch adjustment through the access hole on the end of the door close to the 3 latch bolts. In my case, loosening the hex head screw via the access hole and lifting the latch, then tightening the screw, solved my "no door open from outside problem". Maybe everyone out there knows about this latch adjustment but me. But the point is, before removing the inside door panel when trying to fix this problem, always check the door latch adjustment first!
