Default 1989 Dakota Sport Convertible 4x4

I have an '89 Dakota with a 3.9L/V6 engine. My question is, what would I be looking at and getting into if I was considering upgrading the motor to a 4.7L or a 5.2L? My problem is I do not have enought horsepower for my towing needs. Can anyone offer any information? I would assume that with a V6 to a V6 that there would be minimal changes that would need to be done. With a V6 to a V8, probably a mount kit, cooling fan, wiring harness, etc.???

Would one be better/easier than the other? Is there anything I can do to the 3.9L to increase the horsepower?

I personally would keep the 239 and put headers, true duals, cold air intake and run an extra transmission cooler (if you tow that often.) It should give you a bit more power and keep the transmission cooler for towing. Cheaper than doing a motor swap.

Cool truck isn't it. Mine isn't a 4X4, but love the convertible. I think upgrading the 3.9 is the way to go unless you have really nice budget to work from. Just repainted mine black cherry and replaced the top. Love driving it, it really turns heads going topless!!
How many miles on your 3.9? Rebuilding it would help if you have high mileage.
