My A/C 96 w/ 3.9L
A/c will run you out of the truck in town. Get on the interstate and it still blows but does not cool. Please Help. It's been 103 in coastal Georgia and I drive over 20 miles each way to commute to work mon thru fri and the heat is gettin old! Already tried the ac clutch cycling switch on the dryer.
Have you checked pressure in the system? Is the clutch actually cycling, compressor turning on when you trigger the AC.
96 is 134a so you can go to the parts store and pick up a recharge kit with a gauge. Get a good one with a gauge that can be used without being attached to the can of 134a. If it is low try topping it off. My wifes car, which was a 98, used to need a can every 2 years. Had a slow leak somewhere, and 134a systems don't hold their charge as well as the older r12.

Compressor runs or it wouldn't freeze you out while driving in town so the compressor is good and it's charged. It's only when I go over 65 mph that it's not blowing cold. I can slow down to 60 or so on the interstate and it'll get cold again. It's pissin me off!!!
HI,
Could it be that the evaporator core is begining to fail? Since you said you have already checked all the other major components of the cooling system, the last thing I could think of is that your evaporator core is not working properly (and because the evaporator core is located somewhere in the middle of dashboard, thus, harder to check for leaks). My Dodge Dakota does not have AC due to a bad evaporator core. I am still trying to fix it. For what I have been reading here and other Dodge Dakota related web sites, the evaporator core on Dodge Dakotas is likely to fail after a few yeas of usage due to water not being able to drain off out of evaporator core.
Check www.dodgedakotas.com and you may be able to find more info regarding the problem with your truck.
P.S .. I am not a mechanic .I am just someone trying to change the bad evaporator core in my truck.

Handy Mex
