Overdrive and Stalling issues
I have a 93 Dodge Dakota 5.2L LE automatic that seems to be not shifting into overdrive on the highway and stalls when coming to a stop on sitting at a red light. The problem only occurs occasionally - the most recent stiuation was as follows:
Drove 2hrs on the highway at 115 km/hr idling at 2000 RPM - no issues, ran fine.
Started driving home the next day and noticed it was idling high, drove for 10 mins and then shut it off.
Started it up and continued driving one block, stopped at a stop sign and the truck stalled.
Started it up again and continued driving at 115 km/hr and the idle was at 3600 RPM. Tried to reset the overdrive with the overdrive button. No change to RPM.
Continued to drive home 2hr on the highway and at the first stop the truck stalled. Started it up again and it stalled again at the next stop.
The first time the problem occurred for me the truck started sputtering immediatly after starting and was idling low. Drove for 1/2 block and then the truck stalled. Tried to restart several times but the truck would not restart. Waited 15 mins and tried to restart unsuccessfully. Removed battery cables and left sitting for 15 mins and tried to restart unsuccessfully. Left sitting overnight without battery cables on and then tried to restart successfully. I took the truck in for service to fix the problem but they could not get any code errors and could not determine what the problem was.
The previous owner mentioned that the truck had stalled similarly twice in the past 11 years and felt that by removing the battery cables that computer was somehow reseting itself and this allowed the truck to restart.

When it does this next time, remove a spark plug wire from one of the spark plugs. Than have a friend crank the engine. When you short-out the wire (hold it a little above the engine block), you should be able to see a spark. NOTE: only have your friend crank the engine over long enough to verify if or if not there is a spark generated. By removing the spark plug wire, you are allowing raw fuel to enter the catalytic convertor, and this MUST be minimized.
You also need to make sure that the engine is getting fuel.
