95 dakota 318 cuts out at 3100 rpm's
Hi,
I have a 1995 dodge dakota ext cab 4x4 with a 318 magnum in it. It is a new remanufactored motor from proformance.
the problem that I am having is that it is cutting out realy bad at 3100 RPM's. It is almost like a rev liniter is kicking in.
If anyone has any ideas on this please let me know because it has me really stumped.
Thanks,
Mike

I would start by checking into your ignition system. Like the distributor cap and rotor. Make sure your plugs are properly gapped. After that I would try changing your fuel filter and testing fuel pressure to make sure its up to snuff. Then I would move on to other things. But this is what I would look into first if it were me.
Hope this helps

Well after going over the truck and checking the plugs, plug wires and distributer cap and roter button
nothing was found wrong. It turns out that the crank positon sensor was bad. So far it seems to have
fixed the problem.
Thanks for the ideas to check

Well just thought that I would let you guys know that so
far the truck has been in the shop for a week and they have
pulled the heads and determined that the passanger side
head on this new motor was cracked. Im having proformance
send me a new head that should be there on monday.
Hopefully this will fix all my problems. Oh by the way they checked for
coolant in the oil and found none. The hydrocarbons in the radiator were
at 230 though.

Sucks that you've had to be without your truck for a week. (Are they being replaced under any kinda warranty?)
Keep us updated on the situation!

Well more bad luck on the truck. Proformance shipped out the head to my mechanic and UPS
dropped it and sent it back to proformance destroyed. They had to build another head and it
is being shipped out this week.
Yes it is being fixxed under warranty but they only pay a portion of the labor.
But I guess that is better than nothing.

Well just to let everyone know the truckis finally repaired and drivable. Once they got the
head in and got that installed it seemed to run fine, BUT it still had the stalling and bucking issues.
After more checking they ditermined that the altenator was shorting out and causing the PCM
to make the crank sensor misfire the motor.
So spent another $154.00 dollars for a 120 amp altenator and things are runnning great. Motor
has so much more power than the factory motor did.
But now I have another issue to try and figure out. When I turn on the heater or defroster or AC
it has a very foul smell to it like mold or something rotten. Any Ideas on this one guys.
