4wd front wheel bearings?
i need some help on this one.my brother has a 91 3.9 4x4 dakota and his bearings are going bad on the front.ive not had to do this to mine or worry about it yet so i dont know if you have to replace the whole hub or not.and also is it hard to do?thanks
On the 4WD trucks, yes, the hub and bearings are one unit.
I can't tell ya how hard it would be to replace the unit since I've never done it.

Depends on how corroded things are around there. Jack the truck up, remove the wheel. Then get the brake caliper up and out of the way. Pull the rotor off the hub(I think they are two different pieces, I may be wrong....it's been awhile) Breaking the axle shaft nut loose is normally the hardest part. I use a breaker bar with a cheater bar to get that job done. Not sure what size the socket is but I know on the cherokee I had it was a 36mm. I would imagine it to be about the same deal on the dakota. In some cases you can do this before you take the wheel off the truck, that would prolly be better since its a bugger to do with the hub in the air. If you have the wheel off, get a pry bar and just stick in between two of the wheel studs and the ground to keep the hub from turning. After you get that all done its a matter of the three nuts on the back side of the spindle, then I just pursuade the old unit out with my rather large ball peen.
Hope this helps

I just finished replacing the hub/bearing assemblies on my 91. It's a pretty easy job. Make sure you loosen the the axle nut BEFORE you raise the truck. You'll need a 32mm socket and a breaker bar (their torqued to 195 ft lbs). After you loosen the nut, raise the truck, remove the tire, undo the caliper bolts and hang the caliper out of the way, and then remove the brake disc. Next remove the axle nut and then undo the 4 bolts on back of the spindle (which will be a little tight) and remove the hub/bearing assembly. On mine, one assy came out real easy, the other needed a little persuasion from a hammer.
Good luck!
