Fuel pump issue
Hey everyone. had a problem with my dakota lately. it is a 95 sport, 3.9. It sounds like its only running on 5 cylinders most of the time, and lately, its been stalling when you come to a complete stop. Took it to the mechanics, and he said it is likely fuel pump. But a new one is $635. So im gonna drive it to till it dies. assuming it does lol. so i was just wondering what people thought about putting a used pump on ( can get used tank and pump for $50), or if it was worth it.
OK maybe I'm off but do you get a check engine light? I would go for the easier problem and see if the IAC and throttle body need cleaning. Sounds like similar symptoms or did miss something?
My check engine light does work but it hasnt came on. The symptoms are missing, stalling at stop lights( where the truck is in gear(automatic)but foot is on brake), takes about 10-12 cranks for it to start where it used to be about a half turn, and poor fuel efficency. So like I had mentioned in previous posts, I took it to the mechanic cause I dont have the facilities to look at it myself. He celaned out the throttle body, and did a good tune up including spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, and oil change. I drove it a few more days, and it didnt improve much. So I took it back and he looked at it again and said it was likely fuel pump, but the cheapest he could find was $635. I later found one for $135 online. Anyway, its still funning like a feedbag full of tom cats, but at least its running. He said one cant be sure it is the fuel pump until it stops completely. So Im going to drive it till it does, because I dont want to replace the fuel pump, and that not be the exact problem. Any other ideas anyone?
I had the same issues with my 96 manual. It was in fact the fuel pump, which in my truck is inside the tank. If I remember correctly it cost a pretty penny as well. Primarily because the tank had to be dropped. And because of the age of your vehicle, getting a used pump is probably not a good idea since the replacement pump is more than likely just as old (or close to). If I remember correctly, Dodge changed the style of the fuel pump a couple of years after production of the 96.
the tank is not hard to drop. just make sure you dont have a full tank
I just cut my straps cause they were rusty anyway and went and bought new ones.

$635 is just outragous... at that price quote I would have been looking for another mechanic. It really is simple and doesn't take any special tools to do, heck here is a link to a basic example from the help section: https://dodgeforum.com/m_402587/tm.htm

There is a way to tell if it's the fuel pump. On your fuel rail there is a test port. Attach a fuel pressure gauge there. You will need to run a series of test: startup, idle, mid-hi rpm, and throttle snap. Record these pressures and compare to factory specs. If you don't have a manual call a dealership and ask to talk to a tech. Oh and by the way this is for your mechanic. [sm=bustedsign.gif]
