what tranny Do I have?
How can I tell what Transmission is in my truck? Is it on the door tag or somewhere. Also is there a list of options on a tag some where. I know there is on the chevys but I am kinda new to the dodge seen. thanks
Since you have the V8 and a pre-1996 Dakota, you would have the 46RH aka the A518.
(In 1996 and on, they used a 46RE with the V8s which was electronically controlled, thus the "E" instead of the "H" for hydraulically controlled)
As for the installed options, etc. the easiest thing to do would be to: a) go to the dealer and have them print you out a build sheet, or b) go here and send Dodge your VIN# and in a few days, they'll email you a build sheet.

ok I hav you telling me that its a A518 tranny and a tranny guy telling me i have a 904 or maybe a 727and someone esle tells me i have a 500 so how do i tell on the truck what i have????
take your vin and call a dodge deal;er parts dept,they can look it up,but,if its a v8 and older than 96,its a A518,also known as a 46rh,if its a v6 older than 96 its a A500,also known as a 42rh

It's my understanding that:
-The 42RH (A-500) is based on the A-999 (which is aka the 32RH). Infact, the 1990 service manual says its based on it, with an overdrive unit slapped on it.
-The 46RH (A-518) is based on the A-727 (which is aka the 36RH). Again, with an overdrive slapped on it.
As rhad said, if its a 1995 or earlier V8, its got a 46RH (aka A518). If its 1996+ V8 than its got the 46RE (aka A518-E). (Provided its an over-drive transmission)
1995 or earlier V6 would have 46RH (aka A500). 1996+ V6 would have 46RE (aka A500-E). (Provided its an over-drive transmission)
Just call a dealer, give them your VIN, and they'll tell ya.
Kind of confusing ([&:]), I know, but, I didn't make it
.
There are numbers right above the filter pan on the casing of the tranny. Also look at the pan shape and bolt pattern. Compare pattern and shape to the front and/or back of a tranny tech manual.

The A500 is (aka 40RH/RE 42RH/RE). The A500 is NOT the same as the 46RH/RE it is 40RH/RE or 42RH/RE. The A500 40RH/RE is the light duty transmission and the A500 42RH/RE is the standard duty one used with V6. The A518 (aka 46RH/RE) is the heavier duty trans used in Dakotas with the V8. If you go to www.scribd.com and type in dodge trucks tech trans service manual it will upload the manual and give you all the specs and applications and years the transmissions were used. It cleared up all the confusion I had.
