Default How do I remove my Clutch Fan???? Whats the trick?

Ok guys, I'm fixing the water pump gasket on my other truck it has the 3.9 V6. I have done this before but can remember the trick. How you hold the water pump pulley from spinning while taking off that large nut that holds the fan on?

I looked in my repair book (Haynes I think) and it was very vague..... no help there.

I also have been googing all day and found nothing either? I didn't remember this being that hard? Any suggestions would be great.

I would try jamming something in between the fan blades and see if that helps.

or if you have one of them strap wrenches, I dont know what there called. but then you can wrap it around the pully to hold it inplace.

you need to wedge a large screw driver or prybar between the pulley bolts while you turn the wrench, check out 3-5 of the haynes book

The Haynes book is actually what I have.... that won't work because there are no bolts on the pulley. The bolts that hold the fan on are on the clutch which spins freely from the pulley. The pully has holes in it but you can't really wedge any thing in them because the holes are blocked by the clutch. I'd post a picture but I won't be by a computer later. I'm going to tackle it after work, I liked the strap wrench idea. Thanks again guys.

Hold the fan with our hand and hit it with an air wrench.

I removed the four bolts holding the assembly to themotor and then held the clutch in my hand while turning the nuts with a wrench.
